Welcome to Angama Mara, a remarkable new safari lodge balanced on the rim of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, over looking what many safari travellers deem the loveliest game reserve on the continent, Kenya’s Maasai Mara.
This is a place where everything is just as it ought to be. The sky melts into the endless plains in a vista so wide it takes your breath away. It’s a place where the romance of canvas combines with dramatic guest areas in a fresh approach to safari lodge design. Inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid air’, Angama Mara seems to float 300m above the Maasai Mara where, every morning, hot air balloons sail past the 10-meter-wide floor-to-ceiling glass fronts of each tented suite.
Stepping off their scheduled flight to Angama’s private hardtop airfield – just a 5-minute drive from the lodge – guests will surely ask themselves ‘Haven’t we been here before?’ That’s because the lodge, comprising two totally separate and intimate camps each of 15 tented guest suites, is situated right where all the romantic ‘Ngong Hills’ scenes were filmed for the movie Out of Africa. At Angama Mara, you can almost hear Karen Blixen’s words: “Here I am, where I ought to be”.
Guests staying at Angama Mara are faced with numerous choices of how they wish to spend their day. Sunrise hot-air balloon safaris, photographing Africa’s abundant wildlife, walking on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, or visiting a Maasai family in their home – these are just a few of the tailor-made adventures on offer. It almost goes without saying that the game viewing in the Mara Triangle is among the most outstanding in Africa. Indeed, all Angama Mara guests have to do is descend a private track directly from the lodge and 20 minutes later witness one of the continent’s most dramatic events: a Mara River crossing. It’s that easy.
