Solio Ranch Conservancy in Laikipia provides an immersive conservation experience in Kenya’s central highlands. This private sanctuary has earned recognition for its crucial role in rhino protection and rewilding. With over two hundred white rhinos and more than one hundred black rhinos thriving in open grasslands, visitors often witness these animals in their natural habitat with the distant slopes of Mount Kenya as a backdrop.
The conservancy was established in the 1970s after rhino populations across Kenya sharply declined. The Parfet family, owners of the land, committed part of their cattle ranch to conservation. Since then, Solio has bred and relocated many rhinos to parks and sanctuaries throughout the region, contributing significantly to species recovery efforts.
Beyond rhinos, the conservancy is home to lions, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, and numerous antelope species. Open savannahs and scattered woodlands make animal viewing a rewarding experience. Game drives often reveal groups of zebras grazing peacefully or giraffes moving slowly through the acacia trees. While predators are more elusive, the sheer number of wildlife encounters creates an experience that feels personal and unhurried.

Due to its elevation, Laikipia has minimal malaria risk. Days are warm but evenings can be cool, especially during game drives, so it is wise to bring layers. Wildlife viewing remains excellent all year, though the dry months of July to September and January to March offer particularly good conditions.
