Bush Walking Adventures In Africa
Walking Safaris In Africa
Offered in both Kenya and Tanzania, not forgetting other African Safari Destinations in the south, walking safaris can be divided into two main types: short guided bush walks offered by a lodge or camp as an alternative activity to game drives, and multi-day guided walking safaris.
The former does not need to be booked in advance and can be built around your safari schedule; the latter requires a degree of fitness, the right gear, and a willingness to engage and immerse yourself in the African Wilderness. Have a look at our recommendations on what to pack for a walking safari.
After a short guided walk, you simply return to camp; on multi-day walking safaris in Africa, you are on foot for most of the day, resting each evening in walk-in tents, with sturdy beds and proper bed linen.
Hearty cooking, warm showers, and cold drinks complete your fly-camping experience. A cook prepares all the meals, and a crew erects each new camp before you arrive in the late afternoon.

Bush Walk Safaris in Kenya and Tanzania
Often low-key walking safaris in Kenya & Tanzania are referred to as ‘bush walks’ – and many of these will emphasize the walking, culture, and scenery, rather than big game encounters. You can often do a short nature walk around camp, looking at flora and wildlife signs, but for more serious bush walks, we always recommend being escorted by a properly armed guide.
Unfortunately, no children are allowed on walking safaris, with children aged from 12 to 15 years and older being allowed, country dependent. The luxury safari lodges that have children’s programs will often take them for a bush bumble in the area right at the lodge – there are plenty of insects, droppings, dung, and more to keep the little ones enthralled.
Witness the great migration and wildebeest crossings in the Serengeti, where millions migrate from south to north of the park as they enter into Masai Mara Kenya.
Masai Mara is known for its best show of wildlife sightings and actions. Wildebeest Migration Safaris are some of the best you can see here including some big cats and big five species.

On a guided walk, you are free to stop and inspect tracks left behind by a male lion as he makes his way back to his pride or scuff marks left by a dove having momentarily enjoyed a dust bath. Your guide may lead you to closer encounters with elephants taking a snooze or drinking at a watering hole, or on a challenging trek to a kopje’s peak to discover what lies beyond it.
Take a break mid-walk, laying out a blanket to spend some time sharing a cup of tea and a muffin as your guide shares stories of their life as a walking guide. Know that when you step back into your car for your afternoon game drive you will head out more informed and versed in the hidden tricks and illusions of nature.

Most of our selected African safari camps and African parks offer walking safari options, from 30-minute excursions to half or full-day activities that provide a fresh perspective. We can also recommend certain safari destinations that provide truly unique encounters, like tracking white rhinos or large elephant herds.
Some conservancies take you even deeper, with multi-day walking safaris across land that’s inaccessible to vehicles. It’s truly an adventure into the unknown, complemented by mobile camps in the heart of the wilderness.
On a multi-day African safari, we really recommend taking up the opportunity of a walking safari. The connection you make with the wild is exquisite and the thrill of the experience soon translates into an indelible charm.
Walking safaris are a daring form of exploration, but the thrills and rewards are incredible. Your guides take your safety very seriously. Most Safari camps and Lodges offer trained professional walking safari guides that know the best routes, places, and spots to learn about flora and fauna.
Not all guides are allowed to conduct walking safaris, these kind of safari activities require professional expertise to exercise them. Only when guides have spent hours as backup guides will they be allowed to head off with their tracker. You must listen to the guides carefully, despite what your instincts tell you to do. Humans are generally seen as a danger and avoided by animals.
The wildlife sightings you will see on your walking safari are often more intense, and more intimate than from the back of a vehicle.
Elephants can be seen regularly, perhaps a white rhino from a distance, hyenas trotting past to check you out, and more on bush walk safaris. It is not unheard of to see lions, they are lazy cats especially when their bellies are full, so it is a treat to see them on foot – at a distance.
You will learn why the hyena scat is white, what a salt lick is, scent-marking methods of different animals and so many birds!
