Located on the banks of a river from which it has taken its name, Sand River Masai Mara is located within the Masai Mara National Reserve, close to the Tanzanian border.

Situated on a secluded and picturesque site, Sand River Masai Mara replicates the heyday of exclusive permanent tented camps of the late 1920’s.

The interior fixtures and furnishings mirror this period perfectly, reminding all who visit of those countless Hollywood movies that have paid homage to a classic era of African adventure.

Sand River Masai Mara is an ideal destination, at any time of the year, for those wishing to enjoy exceptional game-viewing. The National Reserve is best known for its large concentrations of big cats, such as leopard, cheetah and, of course, lion. Even the dramatic arrival of the Annual Migration merely adds to an already abundant resident wildlife that awaits discovery.

Vehicles are left on the far river bank, and the camp is therefore quiet and undisturbed. The guest tents at Little Governors’  have wooden decks with large verandahs for guests to enjoy the constant game activity that takes place around the natural watering hole at the camp.

All Governors’ properties are unfenced, and at Little Governors’ there is a resident family of warthogs that wander freely through the camp. Guests may need to make way for elephants which sometimes visit the camp at lunch time. We have recently installed a solar power system in camp and Little Governors Camp is now running on 100% solar power. Little Governors Camp has been awarded a Silver Eco-Rating from Eco Tourism Kenya due to our sustainable practices in place in camp. Activities on offer from the camp include game drives in our custom built 4 wheel-drive vehicles, great for wildlife photography and Hot Air Balloon Safaris (extra charge), visits to the nearby Masai community manyatta and visits to the community and conservation projects we support.

  • Base Camp Luxury Camp:-

Basecamp Masai Mara – fittingly referred to as the ‘mother of all camps’ by our staff – is where our story started. Lovingly run by our Maasai staff, BCMM is as much a home as it is a tourism destination. Here guests become more than visitors, they become part of the Maasai community. We welcome you to join us around the fireplace, for story sharing and star gazing.

In an effort to revive the natural habitat Basecamp has planted more than 70 000 indigenous trees around the Talek River. Consequently, BCMM has turned into a tree lover’s paradise and a haven for birdlife. Each morning a symphony of birdsong will wake you up as the sun rises over the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Park, home to the greatest gathering of wild animals on the planet. Maasai Mara is only a short walk away across our private suspension bridge.

Not far from the camp you will find the thriving village of Talek, whose community has been a close partner of Basecamp since the beginning. In and around Talek you will encounter authentic rural life, with all its mesmerizing vibrancy and cultural components. In the surrounding areas, Basecamp has initiated several community programmes with the aim of empowering local people through capacity building, awareness raising, and vocational training. While staying at BCMM guests are encouraged to visit the BMB handicraft centre located next to reception, and to plant a tree in our tree plantation.
